So how does it work?
Amplified roaming bands
In NOMAD’s case, the lead singer uses a wireless mic of course. Backing vocals are provided by the other band members via headsets. Instruments-wise, guitar and bass are plugged into wireless battery packs and the drums are provided by a very nifty wheeled cajon or wireless electric drumkit.
The quality of amplified sound is impressive with deep bass and crisp highs – make no mistake, this is not sit-down entertainment, they will get you on your feet.
The band call their show a unique form of ‘dining entertainment’ and certainly they interact with the audience in a way that wasn’t technologically possible 10 years ago.
Acoustic roaming and wandering bands
There are also the UK's best acoustic roaming bands or wandering bands featured on FixTheMusic – this option is very popular for smaller weddings or where your wedding venue has a strict sound limiter. A roaming wedding band will often perform a wide mix of pop covers – from the 60s to today's current hits, often with a slightly folk edge to the repertoire.
If you fancy transforming your birthday party, wedding reception or corporate event to a modern mediaeval banquet, then make an enquiry on FixTheMusic where we’ll be promoting a variety of wandering groups over the next few months.
The bands are also known as "wandering bands" – as they tend to wander in between and mingle with guests whilst playing their music and singing. Although almost every wandering band in the UK is based in London, most are happy to travel to other parts of the UK.
Most of the acoustic bands consist of a singer or two (usually male vocals, but often female too), acoustic guitar, cajon or other percussion and double bass. Occasionally the bands might also add a saxophone to the line-up.
Roaming brass bands
Another popular option is to book a roaming brass band – these modern brass groups are inspired by the roving New Orleans-style band but updated with a modern and often unusual twist. The bands usually feature trumpets, trombones and sousaphones, and occasionally a singer or even rapper to perform alongside them. These acoustic brass groups tend to be much louder than the acoustic guitar-based wandering bands, so are perfect for large public events (such as charity parades or marches).
Roaming jazz bands
Another popular type of band in this style is the roaming jazz band. Although similar to the other acoustic roving bands mentioned here, a roaming jazz band specialises in performing jazz and swing music. These groups are perfect for street parties.
They usually feature instruments such as the clarinet, banjo, trumpet, trombone, and may also include a singer or vocalist. The genre of music they play is typically Dixieland jazz (or hot jazz / traditional jazz) that originated in New Orleans.
They are especially popular at city weddings – and often hired to wander outside alongside guests after the wedding ceremony has taken place.
Busking-style bands
Lastly, the bands are often described as a busking-style band. Indeed, part of the tradition of the roaming acoustic band does stem from busking musicians – traditionally, musicians performing live on the street would be acoustic of course as they would have no access to power or amplification.
Every roaming band for hire on FixTheMusic have public liability insurance and PAT tested equipment.
“Thank you for your outstanding performance at The Goring hotel for the wedding of S & J in June 2026. As a luxury wedding planner, I have the pleasure of working with some exceptional suppliers, and The Wandering Three are right at the top of that list. On the day, they performed as a five-piece band, and the energy, musicianship and vocals were simply fantastic! Beyond the music, they were impeccably organised, warm, flexible and a genuine pleasure to work with. Their repertoire is incredibly varied, they keep the music flowing seamlessly throughout the day, happily accommodate guest requests wherever possible, and even took care of the announcements for us, which was hugely appreciated. Most importantly, they created an atmosphere that had everyone smiling, dancing and talking about the celebration long after it had finished. A truly first-class team, and one I would recommend without hesitation for any high-end wedding or event.”
“5 stars are not enough! A very fun band of excellent quality with a brilliant repertoire. But, the most important thing they bring is an intensely personalised attention to detail. Nothing was too much trouble in the planning. Every effort was made to understand the event and what was important to us as the clients. There was zero sense of bashing out a standardised set list. In fact, new music was even learned to make this event as special as possible. Timings were immaculate and The Roaming Folks went out of their way to work with the other staff at the event. Not to mention, it was intensely hot and they did not wilt, or even hint at any difficulties. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.”
“The Ferryman are amazing!! Zack and the rest of the band got the party started at our wedding and kept an amazing positive vibe throughout! On an extremely hot day the band had amazing energy, they were able to play music outside our town hall and then played throughout the journey to the reception on a vintage double decker bus, very impressive! They got such an amazing vibe going and all our guests absolutely loved them. Throughout the day the band were just incredible and Zack was really friendly and responsive when booking the band as well. Could not recommend them higher!!”
“The guys were fantastic. I found it impossible to find a great band, that also could do Irish folk music with a fiddle. They were just what we'd hoped for energetic, great voices and unbelievable musicians. They really made our wedding. I highly recommend.”
“I would be grateful if you could pass on my heartfelt thanks to The Roaming Sisters. The girls did a brilliant performance that worked very well in the internal and outer space. All the songs were well received. Some were quite challenging too! I was so pleased to see my grand niece receiving her very first guitar and music lesson. Bravo, Bravissimo!”
“I have to say that The London Roaming Band were absolutely fantastic. Everyone commented on how good they were. They were not only perfect for the occasion, had exactly the right volume (not too loud or soft) but they were also lovely people whom our guests enjoyed chatting with.”
“The Roameo Band were absolutely fantastic at our client’s wedding party from start to finish. They created such an amazing atmosphere and had everyone on the dancefloor all night. The guests absolutely loved them, and their energy and interaction with the crowd were brilliant. They were also incredibly friendly, professional, and very quick to respond throughout the planning process, which made everything so easy for us as event planners. We would highly recommend them for weddings and parties, and we would love to work with them again in the future!”
“As good as everyone says. Extremely professional in the organisation and lead up, and unbelievable vibes on the day. Dance floor full all night!”
“Absolutely brilliant. Really elevated the whole event. They were totally self sufficient, incredibly easy to deal with, very helpful and charming and of course very talented. Couldn’t recommend more! ”
“Sunbirds Duo were absolutely brilliant! The vibe from start to finish was spot on, with great music that really lifted the whole atmosphere. Professional, energetic, and genuinely fun to listen to—they made the event feel special and memorable. Would definitely recommend!”
“If we could leave 6 stars we would. Sunbirds Duo were, without doubt, the best money we spent at our wedding. We had so many guests asking about them afterwards and complimenting us on our choice to book them. They played before and during our ceremony, as well as a roaming trio at our drinks reception. But the highlight by far was them gatecrashing (planned!) our dessert, duetting with guests and dancing around the tables. If you do one thing for your wedding, book these guys!”
“Thank you so much for coming and performing at our friend's special birthday party! You rocked the house and made a very emotional occasion very special and intimate. Just the right touch. Recommend anyone to book the band. You will not be disappointed. Making memories to remember.”
